Art Autumn Term 2 22 Year 1, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6
Year 1
Year 1 have been busy exploring mark making.
Using different drawing pencils to draw different shapes and make them into aliens, and talking about the different kind of lines that the different pencils make: darker, fatter, lighter, thinner etc. We asked, which pencils do we like the best? Why?
We did some sewing around alien’s underpants using pre-made holes in card and wool. We Threaded our own needle, and practised this in provision.
We learned the names of the primary colours and talked about how they can be mixed to make secondary colours. We matched colours to objects that we could observe.
We used a variety of tools to paint – including the use of different brush sizes and types.
We used paints to mix different colours, making a colour mixing chart red+yellow=orange for the 3 primary colours. We talked about what happens when we put more yellow in the orange – it gets lighter etc.
Using our painting knowledge, we painted some “Kandinsky Circles” whilst mixing paint. We started with red and painted a circle, then used some yellow and mixed it on the red circle at the edge to make orange then continued with yellow until it was just yellow as the circle gets bigger. We can talk about what we did and why.
We tried colour mixing with chalks to learn what happens when we use 2 colours of chalk next to each other and smudge them in the middle to mix them. Do they make the same colours as the paint when you mix them?
We practised our new skill by drawing planets using the colour mixing method with the chalks, then added white stars.
We made marks in print with a variety of objects, including natural and manmade objects.
We selected, described and used different materials to create images from our imagination, experience or from observation.
We looked at the work of Yayo Kusama and used her inspiration to make prints and collage using anything that we could find! We recalled our colour mixing and tried to mix colours as we printed!
Use the dried prints to cut/rip etc and make group pictures of alien landscapes, link to geography maps.
Our Evaluation of art this term:
We changed the media we used from chalk to oil pastels for colour mixing and development of skills. This worked well and we were pleased that we had made the change.
Year 4
Year 4 have been developing our understanding of symmetry to help us draw accurate geometric shapes. We started by looking at different Anglo-Saxon broaches and noticing the patterns and lines of symmetry. We then practised drawing different geometric shapes and moved onto designing a broach design
We then made informed choices about paper and media when drawing. To achieve this, we drew our design on sugar paper, water coloured paper and in our cartridge paper books. Most of us preferred drawing on cartridge paper as we didn’t need to press on as hard.
We looked at making and matching colours with increasing accuracy. We recapped our primary and secondary colours and how they can be achieved. To further our learning, we used more specific colour language e.g. tint, tone, hue and shade.
Next, we created original outcomes through the use of colour and pattern, using geometric, repeating and symmetrical patterns. We used our geometric design and drew them onto a foam pad. To print our design, we covered our roller in ink and covered the foam pad. Once our pad was covered with ink, we pressed a plain piece of paper to press the design on.
To end the term, we created a collage using our geometrical design. We were very creative and thought carefully about the everyday materials we could use our designs.
Year 5
We have been busy drawing Bolton Abbey in colour using watercolour pencils, inspired by the work of artist Richard O’Neil.
We have been using our sewing skills to make and embellish a drawstring bag, to take with us on our UK adventure!
We have also made clay poppies and decorated stones with poppies for a remembrance service at Heaton graveyard in November. They were beautiful.
Year 6
We developed ideas using different or mixed media (pencil, crayon, watercolour, oil pastel and chalk)
We developed the continuous line technique, developed continuous line drawing, developed control, expression, shape and detail
We created shades and tints using black and white
Articulate their deeper knowledge of line to create portraits.
