Design Technology
Design Technology Curriculum 2025 – 2026
At HSTB, we love design technology because it is practical, it helps us solve problems and it gives us skills for the future. We want our children to develop original ideas using their creativity and imagination and to be inspired to choose careers in STEM.
Year 1
As part of Year One’s Blooming Brilliant Britain topic, we made Welsh Leek and Potato soup!
We learnt how to peel, chop and prepare vegetables safely.

Year 2
In DT, the children designed and created Mr. McGregor’s Garden using a variety of materials and joining techniques, exploring how different materials can be fixed together to make strong and stable structures.
Inspired by our topic The Wonderful World of Beatrix Potter, the children also baked delicious carrot cake muffins linked to Mr. McGregor’s garden. They practiced a wide range of cooking skills, including preparing, measuring and weighing ingredients, grating carrots, carefully mixing and safely baking.
All activities encouraged creativity, independence and teamwork across the topic.

Year 3
After studying and writing about hedgehogs, we decided to design and build our own hedgehog houses. We have created these to put out before they hibernate next winter. We made a range of designs and decided on our favorite.
We took it in turns to build the house with the help of Mrs. Naqvi and Mrs. Butt. We all helped with different aspects of construction until it was finished and ready to go.
We hope to find a cosy place in the school grounds to place the hedgehog house for next winter’s hibernation.

Year 4
Pencil toppers – The year 4 children enjoyed practicing their design and sewing skills making pencil toppers. They followed a winter theme measuring the size of fabric that was needed, choosing fabric and other resources, cutting and then sewing the fabric together. Children got to choose a variety of resources if they wanted to make different types of pencil toppers.

Year 5
In the Autumn term, year 5 practiced sewing: running, cross and blanket stitch. We then went on to design our Yorkshire Rose draw string bag. The children first used their cutting skills to create the Yorkshire rose and then stitched the rose (using their existing skills and knowledge) onto the front of the bag.

Year 6
Day of the Dead Cooking
To Celebrate Day of the Dead, children followed a recipe to make salsa and guacamole. We used lots of DT skills such as chopping, dicing, mashing and grating to prepare the vegetables. Some of us used a food processor to blend the ingredients into a smoother paste. We had tried a variety of different types of each dip to ascertain which we preferred before designing our own recipe. Miss Marshall came to judge our dips and found it very hard to choose which was best.

Mexican Craft Fidget Toy
In Year 6, children created their own fidget toys. We linked them to our Mexican topic and made skull shaped crafts, which were stuffed with wadding and marbles.
First, we created two different designs. We then chose our favourite and created a prototype using black card and paper. After that, we chose the coloured felt that we wanted to use, sticking them carefully to our plan and prototype. We practised threading a needle and using different stitches. We used the blanket stitch to seal the edges and embellished the skulls using beads and sequins. Finally, we added wadding and a marble so the user could use the product as a fidget toy.
